Ambitech Engineering Corporation (Ambitech) and several of its staff members recently provided financial and volunteer support for two events of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The first event, the AIChE 2008 Midwest Regional Conference held in September at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) campus included two, half-day Student Outreach Programs for Chicago area high school students. The second event, a lunch time speaking engagement in October, included Ambitech’s Director of Process Engineering, Ralph Sapko, presenting ‘Career Tips Along the Road to Chemical Engineering’ to the AIChE student chapter of the Illinois Institute of Technology.
One of the Program Chairs for the 2008 AIChE Midwest Regional Conference was Ambitech’s Shannon Brown, Principal Engineer, who was recently named a Fellow of the Institute and will be so honored for this prestigious accomplishment in a January 2009 meeting. The Student Outreach Program included a keynote speech by Al Sacco, the first chemical engineer in space; numerous presentations and exhibits regarding chemical engineering and its career opportunities; a tour of the UIC Engineering College; and lunch with other students and chemical engineering professionals. Ambitech provided funding to underwrite the cost of bussing the high school students to the event from Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Without this direct funding, area high schools could not have afforded to transport any of their students to this highly valuable and effective event.
Thanks to the support provided by Ambitech, other corporate entities, and Ambitech’s employees; the Student Outreach Program was considered a success as over 250 high school students attended the two-day event and were able to receive valuable information regarding chemical engineering and the various career opportunities within the discipline.
